GOOD THINGS TAKE THEIR TIME.

Mehendi

గోరింటాకు

Henna from wrist to fingertip, and nobody able to hold a cup for the rest of the afternoon.

THE TRADITION

An afternoon
in fine lines.

The henna goes on in tiny, patient lines: hours of it on Nethra’s hands and feet, and whatever the artists have time for on everyone else’s palms. Somewhere in her design, Srikar’s name is hidden. Finding it is an event of its own.

Then comes the waiting, hands held carefully away from everything, while somebody else is persuaded to pass the snacks. There is a dholak, there is far too much food, and there are absolutely no urgent errands.

GOOD TO KNOW

Give it
time.

Henna needs four to six hours to darken, so get yours done early if you want it deep by the wedding. Bring your stories; we will find someone with free hands to pass the tea.
