THE TRADITION

One umbrella.
One very large morning.

Before he can be a husband, Srikar has to be made a bridegroom. There is a bath, a new dhoti, the sacred thread, and — for reasons the elders will happily explain at length — a ceremonial umbrella he is expected to carry with a straight face. The uncles will have advice. Most of it will be about the umbrella.
